Autumn in Venice

Walking through Venice is like stepping into a water color painting.  There is no clear division of where the colors begin and end, especially as the reflection in the water creates this joke to fool the eye.  And then-- there is Venice in the autumn, often set within a heavy morning fog that does nothing but enhance the allure, while blurring the lines.  A truly unique city that I have finally returned to after 10 years-- Venice is just as I remember it, if not even more incantevole, everywhere the eyes may lead.

Lovely bar & residential buildings in a piazza

Love the colors and rhythm of this image

Bold colors and guilding of the gondolas

Piazza San Marco and the Procuratie

Repeating Corinthian columns of the Procuratie

Canal view of Ponte dei Sospiri

Typical city center with shops

Quiet residential area

Venice around 9:30 on a foggy morning

Feeling the allure

Lagoon with Isola di San Michele (a cemetery) in the background

Typical Venetian Gothic window design

A classic tourist spot: the gondolas

  Venetian Gothic architecture

One of my favorite dream homes

The Bridge = Il Ponte

An ode to the new Garbatella bridge... As seen from my balcony, both by day and by night, as it darts down Circonvallazione Ostiense... Linking the Roman roads.

The Bridge
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
(an excerpt)

I stood on the bridge at midnight,
As the clocks were striking the hour,
And the moon rose o'er the city,
   Behind the dark church-tower.

[...]

How often, O, how often,
In the days that had gone by,
I had stood on that bridge at midnight
And gazed on that wave and sky!

[...]

The moon and its broken reflection
   And its shadows shall appear,
As the symbol of love in heaven,
   And its wavering image here.
